Media Development Consultant & AI Governance Specialist | Asia-Pacific
I’ve spent 26 years working at the intersection of media systems, institutional capacity building, and the kind of change that actually sticks. That means designing training programs for public broadcasters who need to work differently, advising organizations on how to bring AI into newsrooms without destroying editorial trust, and helping media institutions across Asia-Pacific build the frameworks they need for a landscape that stopped waiting for them.
Currently I am based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I work independently. And I take on engagements where the problem is real and the organization is serious about solving it.
What I Do
My work falls into two areas that feed each other. Consulting and training, not as separate services, but as two ends of the same process.
AI Governance for Media Organizations
I help broadcasters, development agencies, and media institutions understand what responsible AI adoption actually looks like in practice — not in theory. That means governance frameworks, editorial policy, workflow redesign, and the harder work of shifting organizational culture. Western AI frameworks don’t translate cleanly into Asia-Pacific newsroom contexts. I know both sides of that gap well enough to bridge it.
Media Capacity Building & Training Design
I’ve designed and delivered over 137 training programs across 30+ countries for broadcasters, journalists, UN agencies, and government media bodies. My approach is built on Training Needs Analysis, not assumptions. I build programs that transfer skills into the room and into practice, not certificate collections that expire on the way home.
Who I Work With
My clients and partners have included:
- Public broadcasters across ASEAN, SAARC, and Pacific Island nations
- UN agencies including UNESCO, UNICEF, ILO, IOM, and ITU
- National media development bodies and regulatory institutions
- International development organizations operating in the Asia-Pacific
- Media training institutes and journalism schools
- Government ministries with media, communication, or digital transformation mandates
The Career Behind It
From 2017 to 2025, I served as Senior Programme Manager and Broadcasting Consultant at the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) in Kuala Lumpur, the region’s primary intergovernmental body for broadcast development. I directed the Asia Media Summit from 2018 to 2024, a flagship event drawing 500+ senior media professionals annually. I led AIBD’s transition to virtual capacity building during COVID-19 and developed policy recommendations on AI ethics, media literacy, and disaster communication for Pacific small island developing states.
Before that, I spent four years at Pakistan Television (PTV) as a Producer and International Relations Officer, where I worked directly with UNESCO, UNDP, and SAARC broadcasters on programming that carried Pakistan’s cultural narrative to international audiences. My earlier years in commercial television in Pakistan — directing, producing, and building audience formats from scratch, gave me a practical ground-level understanding of how media actually works before I started advising others on how to change it.
I started my career in ICT, which is why I approach digital transformation and AI differently from most media consultants. I’ve worked in the code before I worked in the content.
